The Do's and Don'ts of Bridal Boudoir

The Do’s and Don’ts of Bridal Boudoir

By Jill

In the wedding world, boudoir photography has become increasingly popular over the past ten years. Brides have been choosing boudoir as a way to give their grooms the ultimate gift: incredible photos of themselves. The Boudoir Studio was actually birthed from the idea of just offering this service to brides-to-be and has now evolved into offering this unique photo session to every woman no matter her age, body type or where ever she is on this journey of life. Over the years, we have compiled a list of the “dos” and “don’ts” when it comes to preparing for your session.

Do your research.

With the popularity of bridal boudoir exploding, there are many options on who you can choose to photograph this important moment in your life. Be sure to choose a photographer with experience. Having a knowledgeable photographer will help you choose your outfits, pose in a flattering way and most importantly help you feel comfortable and safe. The Boudoir Studio has been photographing brides for 9 years and serves as the greater Rochester area’s “go-to” boudoir photography studio.

Don’t do it alone.

Sometimes, having your partner in crime (ie. your best friend) can help with the nerves and make sure that your personality shines through your photos. We have photographed BFF’s, sisters, and even moms and daughters who come in together to each have their turn in front of the camera. We have also had a bachelorette party photo marathon in our studio! It is important to us that our clients have a comfortable and fun time during their photo sessions so bring whoever you feel comfortable with (Just not your significant other! He/she is welcome to come with you to see your images and make your selection!).

Do get your hair and makeup professionally done.

We have a fantastic team of professional hair and makeup artists who come to the studio to help you look your very best. Tiffany, Bekky, and Shoranda all have many years of experiences working with us and our clients. It is honestly the best way to calm those pre-session jitters when you have an hour before your session, in the studio, to help you feel pampered and special.

Don’t spray tan the day before your session.

If you have never had a spray tan before, the day before your session is not the time to try it out! We recommend your natural skin tone or tanning at least one week before your session. We don’t want you to feel self-conscious if a spray tan did not work out as planned or if you have had a skin reaction. If anything, drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your session and avoid tan lines or sunburns.

Do be well groomed.

We are just beginning to get into summer so hopefully, women are shaving and/or waxing appropriately by now. Be mindful of shaving injuries and treat your shaving bumps a few days before your photo session. Sometimes, brides can be so busy with wedding planning that she can forget those minor details (like shaving the pits) before her session.

Don’t feel like you have to wear lingerie.

Our biggest question in bridal boudoir is: What am I going to wear? We have you covered! A boudoir consultation is part of every client who walks through our door. We help you decide what to bring and will even help you narrow down your choices. A good rule of thumb is 1. Bring something for you. 2. Bring something you love. 3. Bring something wedding related. 4. Bring something your groom would love. If you are having trouble figuring this all out, take our Boudoir Personality Quiz to start your process.

Do surprise your groom.

This one is tough. I mean why else would you be leaving the house with a bag of lingerie and heels? We help our clients maintain the secrecy of your session and also help you pick out the perfect gifts for your future husband. Most of our clients gift a gorgeous album the night before the wedding, the day of the wedding or on the way to the honeymoon.

Don’t wait until the last minute.

We recommend booking your session within 3-6 months before the big day! You already will be scrambling with last-minute wedding errands, your boudoir session will need to be carefully planned out. After your session is over you will still need time to pick your favorite images and have your products made.

Do get your nails done and rings cleaned.

This may seem like a small detail, however, having your hands near your face could actually distract away from your beauty if you still have the chipped bright pink nail polish still on. If you would like your nails painted, we recommend a neutral color so it won’t distract your groom from your gorgeous face and body.

Don’t forget your wedding items.

Bring your veil, your wedding shoes, your garter, your wedding night lingerie and anything else that is special to you. It is essential to tie these beautiful items into your boudoir session. What a great reason to wear these things more than once!

Last but not least. . .

Don’t Stress, just Do it!

The months leading up to the wedding can be stressful so what better way to celebrate you, than to capture this incredible life milestone.
