“My name is Jessica and I work for Market Seafood LLC I work alongside my husband, Zach. We are partnered together, husband and wife small operated business we work out of the Rochester and Syracuse public markets. We sell wholesale and retail seafood.”

Q. How has COVID-19 impacted your business?

“Our business has been impacted by COVID-19 in so many different ways. I made a list of the ways it has impacted us the most. Right now our sales have gone down. People are not getting out to the market so we aren’t able to make that face to face connection and interactions with our customers. We are not able to take the time and help our customers choose what they want for dinner. Our material costs, our costs for being opened right now has increased. We have to use triple the amount of gloves from changing them. Our cleaning supplies, we go through it from constantly cleaning and disinfecting counters and surfaces. If a surface is touched we are always wiping it down right after every single customer. Then our suppliers have been impacted as well. Our fisherman that are out there right now, there are only 25% of them working so you can imagine a lot of inventory is really hard to get right now. Fresh product is the most scarce and difficult to get. Frozen fish is going to be easy because there has been so much of it and it’s not something that is an issue right now. But as far as the fresh fish, fresh seafood, it’s going to start getting more scarce because there are not as many fishermen or fishing companies or charter boats out right now. There are so many other impacts on our business, but those are our 3 biggest issues right now.”

Q. How are you responding to COVID-19 as a business?

[youtube=://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57jxu3F7xG4&w=640&h=480]

“As a business, we are constantly being updated with new restrictions and guidelines for us to follow by the CDC, the Food and Agriculture Organization, the Rochester Public Market and the Syracuse Public Market. We have so many new guidelines to follow and we just want to make sure that we are taking it very positively. This is a new chance for us to move forward as a business and learn how fast we can adjust and how fast we can adapt to the changing environment. We just want to make sure that our community knows that every wall that has come up we’ve been learning to climb over. We are continuing to be here for you and provide you with the highest quality of seafood around.”

Q. What will your business be like post-COVID-19?

[youtube=://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Akazx6K0kt8&w=640&h=480]

“When everything settles and goes back to normal, we are planning on still using our new business features as far as pre-ordering, paying online, and deliveries twice a week. We’re hoping that this is going to allow our customers to not only have access to seafood every day of the week but also have it delivered right to their front door.”

Q. How are you contributing positivity during COVID-19?

[youtube=://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLCEirYOZCM&w=640&h=480]

“With all of this negativity and fear that is being spread around our community, my husband and I, as business owners have been trying to bring some positivity to our family and customers at home. We’ve been doing live cooking demonstrations as often as we can so that way you can cook alongside us and enjoy some laughs. It’s real-time, just the two of us, husband and wife having fun in the kitchen. We make jokes and it’s not a professional cooking show at all. But it’s fun, it’s just us, doing what we love in our home and we’re hoping to share that with our community. When you order one of our delivery boxes, we include a special little surprise to show you that we are thankful that you are supporting our business and to hopefully bring some entertainment to you and your family at home.”
